Gen Charles Gratiot

Charles Gratiot, soldier, was born in Missouri in 1788 and died in St. Louis, Missouri 1855. A West Point grad he was involved in the War 1812and ended up in the Michigan area.

In 1828 the Col. was appointed Colonel of Engineers, brevet brigadier General for 10 years.  He expanded Program of river, harbor, road, and fortification construction.

Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is on the St. Clair River in Michigan and the villages of Gratiot, in MI and Wisconsin, were named in his honor.
